September 28, 2010. CEVA delivered my new 42" Samsung plasma HDTV yesterday. Completely intact, no damage.

Opening the box is easy. This is a one-person set-up really. Not difficult at all.

Open the box. Remove the paperwork and the two parts of the stand. Then pull the TV out of the box and lay it face down with the shipping gray cover on it. Assemble the two stand parts. Then assemble the stand to the TV.

That's pretty much it.

About the screws: These are self-tapping metal screws that seat themselves in a plastic hole. They are not difficult to insert if you have a regular Phillips screwdriver that fits the screw heads. I used one of these to start them and them seated most of the remaining screws with a cordless drill with a Phillips bit. Two of the screws were too close to the stand to be tightened with the drill, but hand tightening was easy. This is a 3 or 4 on a scale of 10 handyman job. Don't let the stand chatter discourage you away from this fantastic buy of a TV.

Lift the TV up and set it on your television stand. Remove the gray cover and the plastic on the screen surround and the base. Plug it in and you are ready to go. Samsung's instant set-up found all my channels quickly.

The factory plasma setting for contrast and color density were fine for me. I did add deeper blacks (one of the reasons I like plasma screens) and then switched the speakers to simulated surround. This is all done easily in the menu.

Sound is better than any TV I have owned and certainly enough for most people who do not have or want a sound system.

The picture is amazing. No buzzing.

I first watched large parts of "Chinatown" and "Patriot Games" on cable broadcasts and was immediately in love with this set. A FIOS On-Demand HD "Mad Men" episode was next. Wonderful.

I watched some of Monday Night football -- no motion blur or pixelation. And I watched the HD PBS news report, and an On-Demand "Jules After Dark" segment with Warren Zevon and Joe Strummer: concert footage was terrific and the sound just fine.

This is my first HDTV. My daughter has a nice (and larger) 2010 Samsung LED model. It seems to lose color for off axis viewers and be a bit washed out in some color zones even head-on (as if it was not giving you all the colors of the scene, especially on faces at a medium distance). This plasma set overcomes all of that beautifully and appears so natural you find yourself smiling at the value and the fidelity of the product.

I prefer this plasma set over the LED (which is about 3X the cost).

About the glare and the glass screen. We have this in our basement media room in between a pair of sliding glass doors and a window. At night there are no issues. During the day this actually appears to work better than the regular flat screen Sony XBR TV it replaced. We have found it easier to view (regardless of sun), but we placed it so the sun was at its back. Not a big deal at all as to reflections.

Is 42" enough? We view it at 8 - 12 foot distances. It's plenty close and huge and brilliantly colorful and clear. A bigger room might call for a larger set. And I think this might be too big for a bedroom set also.

Bottom line: It's gorgeous. Easy to use and set up. TV is exciting again here.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy plasma, and what a deal this set is on all fronts.

First TV arrived w spider web cracks on the glass screen. (Plasmas ARE more delicate and really do need to be kept uprightor heavy glass plates will crack.) Amazon was very responsive and sent me another through a different shipping company and it arrived quickly and in perfect condidtion. Had been set on an LCD but began comparing to my dad's Panasonic 50" plasma and really was a clear choice after that. This Samsung plasma beats any LCD I've seen with one stipulation: I watch almost all my TV and movies at night, in a dark room. Unbeatble TV if that's your enviro. Colors, clarity superb. If you watch in a well lit room or one with a lamp reflecting off screen, I probably wouldn't go with a plasma.

samsung has improved it plasma line of hdtv this being series 4. we all know how dreat plasma looks compared to some of 1080p, the picture quality is just simply better... the darker shades and contrast can't be even closes to lcd's and also plasma are now lasting just as long as lcd at less power comsumption when they first hit the market they samsung plasma are now more greening with less energy uses. i just bought my 42: samsung for just [...] with special carrier services at another seller for less and better shipping worth [...] for free and no taxes to new york the store nam starts with letter a and is 2 letters long. anyway look at the quality of the pictures posted by another owner their beautiful and true. i cannot take better pic.s than he and why would i ..? this samsung 42" series 4 plasma hdtv has the best picture and sound quality [...] bucks can buy you ! why spend more .. ? really why ? just buy one here from amazon and in few dys you be sitting back aweing i got the best hdtv here for my money... thank you all. -m
