I researched many TVs before buying this one. I focused on Plasma, LED, and LCD sets. I had settled on a 65inch plasma and went to the store to purchase one. The salesman asked me if I had looked at DLP? I didn't even know they still made DLP sets to be honest. I was very impressed with the picture quality of the Mits DLP TVs. Then.......he showed me a football game in 3D on this set.....it was AWESOME! If you are a sports fan - do yourself a favor and go to a store and watch demo's on these TVs - it is like you are at the event. During all viewing, the black levels and white levels are very good and the color is sharp and infinately adjustable. You would have to spend 2X-3X as much on a top end plasma or LED to rival the picture quality and 3D capability of the Mits 65838.

I ended up choosing the 838 model rather than the 738 due to the additional sound capability of the 838. As I was shopping for the flat panel TVs I noticed the sound was never very good. The room we have the TV in is pretty big and I need good sound. When I bought the TV, Mits was throwing in a free Polk subwoofer with purchase. The sub can be hooked directly to the 838. That subwoofer + the 16 built in speakers produces phenominal sound. I also have a full AV receiver/surround system hooked up, but I did not want to mess with having to power everything up every time I wanted to watch TV - now I don't have to!

The brightness and viewing angles are good on this set. I have the TV on a 19inch stand. No noticable dimming when standing/sitting if you are more than 6 feet away. I would estimate that viewing angles are good to 150-160 degrees without any real noticable dimming.

Lastly, I find the menu system easy to use. The TV was easy to set up and navigate with.

The only downsides I have found to this set:
1. 3D capabilities - it is still early and you will have to buy the Mits 3D adapter set to view a lot of the content. They have been promising a firmware update to the 738 and 838 series to take car of this, but nothing yet.
2. There is a noticable delay when switching between HD channels. Folks in the forums have commented on this, regardless of service type (Comcast, DirectTV, etc).
3. The factory default settings for color/brightness/contrast are not great. I found I had to spend some time in the advanced menu getting it dialed in to get the proper contrast/brightness/color. It is not hard to do and the menu is easy to understand, it just takes some time.

3D Technology Checklist

This product is 3D-related. To help you get a great 3D experience, use our checklist below to ensure that you have everything you need. If you have any questions or want to learn more about 3D, we invite you to visit 3D 101--our center for everything 3D. To get started with 3D, please ensure that you have:

A Display

The first--and most important--item you'll need is a 3D-ready display--whether it be a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays usually have a higher processing power than older models as they need to display one image for each eye to create a 3D effect.

A Source

While your display is ready for 3D playback, you still need a device to read 3D content (i.e., a movie or a show). This source can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3.

Content

In order to watch 3D, you will need to get some 3D content. This 3D content will come from the source mentioned above in the form of a 3D program, movie, or game. Please ensure that your 3D movies are in the Blu-ray 3D format, as this new format will provide the best 3D experience.

3D Glasses

All 3D HDTVs on the market require Active Shutter glasses to create the 3D effect. You will need to buy one pair of glasses for each viewer. Also make sure that the Active Shutter glasses you buy are compatible with your display--for example, buy the glasses from the same brand as your 3D HDTV.

HDMI Cable

To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you'll need a hgh-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation--with bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second)--will be able to carry the 3D signal without any loss of quality.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?
HDTV Size chart

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Customer Reviews

The Best for Less - Onyasix -
I purchased my WD-65383 from East Coast TV's for ,549 which is an unbelievably low price for such a value. I am 100 percent pleased with the quality and functionality of this TV. The only short coming is the sound, but that can be greatly improved by the addition of a subwoofer. The HD quality and brilliants is superb. I would put this DLP up against any LED or plasma in the same price range (retail).

I first looked at LED/LCD and plasma TVs to replace my seven-year old Mitsubishi 65" HD rear projection TV. I have a large family room and have had 48", 54" and 65" TVs in this room in the past and the 65" fits this room size the best. So, size was one of the main things that I was looking for in a new TV; 65" being the preferred.

I had not considered DLP until I realized that a LCD/LED would be hard to find in this size and both the LCD/LED and plasma TVs would be in a price range above what I was ready to pay. I would just keep watching my old RP until the prices would lower.

Then I noticed that the DLP TVs were considerably cheaper and were available in large screen TVs, so I started researching DLPs. Much to my surprise, the biggest difference in DLPs and the LCDs and plasmas was the depth of the screen. The DLP actually had a lot of plus factors over the others that I was not aware of such as longevity, maintains picture quality over time, replacement of the blub vs replacement of the TV, and quality of picture when compared within the same price range.

Since I had not planned to mount it on the wall, it was a no brainer for me. The DLP was the right choice. I have not tried out the 3D features of this TV yet, but 3D was not my reason for choice, but just another plus factor for purchasing this TV.

P.S. As of this review East Coast TV's has dropped the price to ,375 which makes this the best valued large screen tv out there.

The best I have seen!!! - William C. Nesta - Hartford, CT USA
I bought this 65" TV after many hours of shopping at various stores and comparing. This Mit has the best picture of all the sets that were shown to me. I debated about getting the 738 but bought the 838 which was only 0 more. You get a really great sound system with the 838. Just put a sub woofer on and enjoy. I had an old Mit projection TV for about 12 years and started to have problems with cold solder joints, causing various problems, so deceided to upgrade to the newer model. My old 65" was really big and heavy (335lbs). This unit has the same size screen and weighs about 75 lbs. I have it in my theater room and it is just like going to the movies only the picture is much better. I am currently waiting for a good buy on the 3D kit. I was shown one working in one of the store demos and it was very impressive. They are a little pricy right now, but will go down as demand increases. The lamps in these unit usually last about 4 years and are very easy to replace. They cost about 0 right now. All in all I am very hapy with my Mit and plan to enjoy. I recommend this TV to anybody looking for a large screen TV.

Mitsubishi Customer Service. - La -
I had a 2005 model WD52825 television that gave me alot of problems and after numberous repairs, mitsubishi finally gave up and offered me this TV as a replacement. The picture quality is great but the sound is not great at all even with the 16 speakers.... save yourself the extra cash and get the 738 model and buy a standalone speaker system. i have it hooked up to the yamaha rxv663 with the klipsch quintet speaker system with the klipsch 12" sub.. with great sound complimenting my great picture quality.. I don't need to go to the movie theatres anymore. I'm just waiting on my 3dc-1000 3d kit system. I love this TV so far..
